Cyclone toll mounts to 36, relief works on in war footing

Chennai, Nov 17 (UNI) The toll in the devastation caused by severe Cyclonic Storm ‘Gaja’, mounted to 36 on Saturday, even as relief workswere on in affected districts on a war footing. Sources in the State Disaster Management Authority, which has taken adequate precautionary measures that minimised the damages and was also coordinating in relief works with various agencies, said so far 36 people were killed in rain-related incidents, mostly due to wall collapse, electroctuion and felling of trees. While a maximum of 12 deaths–five men, five women and two children were reported from Tiruvarur district, seven deaths were reported from Pudukkottai, followed by four each in Thanjavur and Nagapattinam, three
in Cuddalore and two each in Trichy, Dindigul and Sivaganga districts.

The sources said apart from human casualties, thousands of cattles and goats, besides deers and other animals, have perished in the cyclone fury, that devastated Cuddalore, Nagapattinam, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur Pudukkottai and Ramanathapuram districts, when it crossed the Tamilnadu and Puducherrycoasts between Nagapattinam and Vedaranyam early yesterday.
Meanwhile, relief and restoration works were on in war footing in the affected
districts, with personnel from various departments and agencies engaged in
operations.
