Srinagar: Army on Monday paid a floral tribute to Lance Naik Nazir Ahmed Wani who was killed in a gunfight with the militants in south Kashmir’s Shopian district yesterday.
Six militants were killed in the gunfight that raged for hours in Batgund village of Kapran area of the district yesterday. A civilian was killed and 68 others injured after the forces fired live ammunition, pellets and tear gas during the clashes.
In a solemn ceremony at BB Cantt, Lt Gen AK Bhatt, Chinar Corps Commander and all ranks, paid homage to the slain soldier, said an army spokesman.
In a show of solidarity, representatives from other security agencies also joined in to pay their last respects to the slain soldier.
“The brave heart form Kulgam district of south Kashmir was a highly decorated soldier and had been twice awarded Sena Medal for gallantry in August 2007 and in August 2018,” said the spokesman
Lance Naik Nazir Ahmed Wani (38) had joined the Army in 2004.
He belonged to Village Cheki Ashmuji of Kulgam Tehsil in Kulgam, Jammu and Kashmir and is survived by his wife and two children.
His mortal remains were taken for last rites to his native place, where he would be laid to rest with full military honours, added the spokesman.
In this hour of grief, he said, the Army stands in solidarity with his bereaved family and remains committed to their dignity and wellbeing.
