Trump warns Brexit deal could hurt British-US trade
Washington, Nov 27: US President Donald Trump warned on Monday that British Prime Minister Theresa May’s Brexit agreement could have the unintended consequence of hurting the Britain’s ability to trade with the United States.
“I think we have to take a look seriously whether or not the Britain is allowed to trade, because right now if you look at the deal, they may not be able to trade with us,” Trump said. “I don’t think they meant that. I don’t think that the prime minister meant that, and hopefully she’ll be able to do something about that. But right now, as the deal stands, she may not, they may not be able to trade with the US, and I don’t think they want that at all. That would be a great big negative for the deal.”
Trump noted, however, that the agreement “sounds like a great deal for the EU.”
The president was referring to the Brexit deal May secured with EU leaders on Sunday under which the Britain would leave the bloc in March.
The cabinet of British Prime Minister Theresa May on Monday submitted the agreement to the Parliament for a final vote. May said the Parliament would hold the final vote on the agreement on December 11. (UNI)
