Washington, Dec 1: US President Donald Trump issued an emergency declaration for the state of Alaska, which was hit by a powerful earthquake, authorising federal assistance to the state authorities.
On Friday, a magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck southern Alaska about ten miles north of the state’s largest city of Anchorage. According to media reports, over 40 aftershocks followed the quake that has caused damage to the state infrastructure.
“Today, President Donald J. Trump declared that an emergency exists in the State of Alaska and ordered Federal assistance to supplement State, Tribal, and local response efforts due to the emergency conditions in the areas affected by an earthquake on November 30, 2018,” the White House said in a statement.
The move allows the US Department of Homeland Security and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to coordinate all disaster relief efforts and authorizes federal funding for these activities.
On Friday, Alaska Governor Bill Walker issued a declaration of disaster int he state following the earthquake.
There have been no immediate reports about casualties caused by the natural disaster.(UNI)
