Train service suspended in Kashmir for security reasons

Srinagar, Jan 26 : Train service was on Saturday suspended as a precautionary measure in the Kashmir valley, where separatists have called for a general strike on Saturday, when the country is celebrating Republic Day (RD).
‘We have suspended all train runs in the Kashmir valley after an advisory was received last night from police, a senior railway official told UNI.
He said, therefore, no train will run on Badgam-Srinagar-Anantnag-Qazigund in south Kashmir to Banihal in Jammu region for security reasons. Similarly, no train will chug on Srinagar-Badgam-Baramulla in north Kashmir track.
The official said railway authorities are acting on the advice of local administration, particularly police who are taking decision keeping in view the safety and security of the passengers, railway staff and property.
He said in the past during strikes and demonstrations, railway property was damaged in the valley.
Trains witnessed heavy rush in the afternoon when people were going to their homes because of holiday today on account of RD and tomorrow (Sunday).
The train service has become very popular in the Kashmir valley as it is being considered cheap, fast and safe against other mode of transport. (UNI)
