‘Murder’ of woman by in-laws:Family demand stern punishment to culprits

Srinagar, Feb 15, :  A family from South Kashmir’s Tral town Saturday staged a protest here in Press Enclave demanding stern punishment to culprits who according to them murdered a young woman in November last year.

Pertinently, in November last year, police arrested a woman Bushra and her son Mehrajuddin Trag for allegedly setting their daughter in law on fire. Nusrat Rasool, the wife of Mehrajuddin succumbed to her burn injuries at SMHS Hospital. The protesters including the father of the deceased woman told Kashmir News Trust that before her daughter breathed her last, she recorded a statement saying that her husband and mother in law sprinkled kerosene oil on her body and then set her on fire.

Ghulam Rasool Zargar, the father of the deceased woman said that her daughter was murdered as her husband was keen to enter into another matrimonial alliance. He said both the culprits including the husband and mother-in-law are in police custody and they should be given a stern punishment.

Reacting over the protest, a police officer told KNT that today was the first hearing of the case in the court of law. “The incident occurred in November last year. We have arrested two accused in this case and they are in custody. We tried our best and presented chalan within a short span of time in the court of law. I don’t think, this protest carries any weight,” he said. (KNT)
