Soldier dies after falling from a snow-clad mountain at LoC in Gurez
Srinagar, Feb 27 : An army soldier died after slipping from a snow-clad mountain and falling into a deep gorge at the Line of Control (LoC) in Gurez sector in north Kashmir district of Bandipora, official sources said on Thursday.
They said Sepoy Karnail Singh of 19 Dogra regiment was deployed in a forward post in Gurez sector, which is surrounded by Pakistan Occupied Kashmir (PoK) from three sides. “Sepoy Singh slipped and fell into a deep gorge on Wednesday,” they said.
They said search and rescue operation was immediately launched and the soldier was recovered under several feet of snow. “Sepoy Singh was evacuated to 92 Base Hospital in Srinagar, where he succumbed,” they said.
Meanwhile, the army on Thursday paid rich tribute to Sepoy Singh at a wreath laying ceremony at Badami Bagh Cantonment in Srinagar. “GOC Chinar Corps Lt Gen K J S Dhillon and all ranks paid homage on behalf of the nation,” they said.
Singh had joined the Army in 2018 and belongs to Changer Tarsooh village in Himachal Pradesh. “The mortal remains of the martyr were taken for the last rites to his native place, where he would be laid to rest with full military honour,” they added.
