Srinagar to have more flea markets, Mayor seeks registration of street vendors
Srinagar, Feb 27 : With an eye to decongest streets of Srinagar city, the Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) has launched a six-step census and registration process for rehabilitation of street vendors in new designated flea markets.
“Have asked for a comprehensive census and consequent registration of all street vendors in Srinagar,” SMC Mayor Junaid Azim Mattu wrote on micro-blogging site twitter.
This, he said will be done in six phases and in a manner to avoid duplication/fake registrations. “This is the initiation of rehabilitation of street vendors into designated flea markets,” he added.
The flea markets will be set up to the tune of Mecca Market, a market that was setup by administration in Lal Chowk, the nerve center of the city few years back. The market was first named Mecca Market and later changed to ‘Fashion Street’. But the name was again changed to ‘Mecca Market’.
Sources said that consultants were being roped in by the Srinagar administration for smart management of street vendors in the city. “The plan is aimed at reducing indiscriminate encroachment of public spaces and involves relocation and re-arrangement of street vendors based on a comprehensive management plan to regulate their manner of operation,” they said.
They said the plan also includes smart solutions to the problem of unregulated vending, bringing registered street vendors under the ambit of an organised sector involved in business, giving them space and opportunities where their trade and conditions can flourish.
“This involves validation of their operation through smart registration — after proper verification based on data collected anew about genuine vendors involved in street vending business — and promotion of their markets and trades through different means and measures,” they added.
