UGC-HRDC, KU holds special session on ‘COVID-19: Facts and fiction’

Srinagar, Mar 02 (GNS): Amid mounting concerns about the impact of Corona Virus Disease, UGC-Human Resource Development Centre of the University of Kashmir organized a special session during the ongoing 84th General Orientation Course on the spread of Corona Virus epidemic and on this occasion a renowned physician and Head, Department of Internal and Pulmonary Medicine, SKIMS, Dr. Parvaiz A. Koul deliberated upon the issue at length.

The session was attended by around 40 Assistant Professors of various colleges and universities of the valley, a statement issued by the varsity PRO to GNS said.

In his highly informative and detailed presentation Dr. Parvaiz Koul discussed the various types of Corona Viruses, etiology, pathogenesis, signs and symptoms, diagnosis, prevention, epidemiology, prognosis and management of the Corona Virus Disease. Dr. Koul also threw light upon the surveillance, public health response, number of cases detected and deaths reported worldwide besides ongoing research efforts at the global level aimed at development of vaccine and drugs against the disease.

He described the world map of the viral epidemic in detail and the potential threat of the same over the Indian subcontinent in general and Jammu and Kashmir in particular. Dr. Koul deliberated on each and every aspect related to the disease.

The presentation by Dr. Parvaiz Ahmad Koul was very well received and appreciated by the participants of the course. They actively took part in the deliberations and thanked HRDC for arranging such special sessions that are adding immensely to their knowledge and insights about such significant and contemporary issues confronted by the global community.

Earlier welcoming the guest speaker, Director UGC-HRDC, Prof. Shabir Ahmad Bhat emphasized upon the need to conduct more and more such lectures for the general awareness and enlightenment about the modes of transmission and prevention of this dangerous disease.

He expressed hope that adequate efforts will be made worldwide to develop a suitable vaccine against the lethal virus and sufficient sample testing facilities will also be made available within J&K in the coming days. He thanked Prof. Parvaiz Koul for sparing time out of his extremely busy schedule for interacting with the participants of 84th GOC on this very important topic. Prof. Shabir also talked about the economic consequences of the virus and how the world markets tumbled during the last few weeks shaking the major companies around the globe and thus calling for necessary measures towards its prevention and control.
