Rajya Sabha adjourned for the day amid Opposition uproar
New Delhi, Feb5 : The Rajya Sabha proceedings were adjourned for the day on Thursday following Opposition uproar over recent Delhi violence.
Barring Zero Hour, no other business was transacted in the House.
Soon after the statement of Union Health Minister Dr Harsh Vardhan on coronavirus and suggestions by the Members on this deadly disease, Chairman M Venkaiah Naidu initiated Zero Hour which led to strong protests by the Opposition Members.
Opposition Members from the Congress, All India Trinamool Congress, Samajwadi Party, Bahujan Samajwadi Party and Left parties stood on their seats and raised slogan in support of their demand to discuss recent Delhi violence.
Meanwhile, amid the Opposition uproar, the Chairman asked the Members who gave their notices for Zero Hour to speak but their voices drowned in the din.
Mr Naidu also warned those Members, who had given notices for Zero Hour and were not raising the issue despite being present, of being debarred from raising issues for the entire session but even this failed to deter the agitating Members. However, some Members from Treasury Bench and some from the NDA fold raised some important issues.
When the Members rushed into the Well and continued raising slogans despite the Chair’s best efforts to restore order, Mr Naidu adjourned the House for the day.
Immediately after the House assembled for the day at 1100 hrs, Leader of Opposition Ghulam Nabi Azad said the entire Opposition was ready to hear the Union Health Minister’s statement and their cooperation was only limited to it.
“The Government has indicated that it will discuss the Delhi violence on or after March 11,therefore, our cooperation is only for the Minister statement and other measures taken by the Government to fight coronavirus. The countrymen should also know the steps taken by the Government to prevent the spread of the deadly disease”, Mr Azad said.
