Ganderbal, Mar 6: Central University of Kashmir (CUK) Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Mehraj ud Din Mir on Friday kick started a mega plantation drive at the varsity’s Main Campus Tulmullah in Ganderbal.
The drive is being organised by the Department of Landscape Development, CUK in collaboration with Department of Social Forestry Kashmir and Sindh Forest Division Ganderbal.
Prof. Mir planted a sapling and highlighted the importance of afforestation in contemporary times. He quoted several religious scripts and underscored the need of planting saplings across the Jammu and Kashmir for the betterment of the future generations. “Everybody is concerned about the unabated felling of trees and rising pollution, which has caused extensive damage to our serene environment,” he said adding that it is the responsibility of every individual to plant as much saplings as possible to check the environmental pollution. He asked the students and faculty members to plant saplings in all the campuses of the university in Ganderbal to make the drive a huge success and urged them to nurture the saplings continuously.
Speaking on the occasion, Regional Director, Social Forestry, Kashmir, Mr. Mehraj ud Din, who also planted a sapling, said, the plantation is imperative to maintain the ecological balance and to address the endemic environmental issues, confronted by Jammu and Kashmir at present. He said that his department was launching massive afforestation campaigns across the length and breadth of Jammu and Kashmir in order to check the growing environmental pollution and undo the damage done due to the felling of trees. He said the department was working tirelessly to reclaim the forests in Jammu and Kashmir. Mr. Mehraj ud Din assured the Vice-Chancellor of every possible support and cooperation to make Tulmulla and other campuses greener.
Dean School of Sciences, Prof. M Afzal Zargar, while addressing the gathering, said the main aim and objective of holding the plantation drive was to sensitize the students and faculty members about the importance of afforestation. “Over the years, there has been massive deforestation in Kashmir, which has resulted in unprecedented climate change in the Valley,” Prof. Zargar said and stressed upon the need to protect the forest cover in Jammu and Kashmir.
Dean Students Welfare, Prof. Farooq Shah, I/c Director Tulmulla Campus, Er. Zahoor Ahmad Najar, I/c Department of Landscape, Dr. Muhammad Latief, senior functionaries from Social Forestry and Sindh Forest Division, Coordinators of Departments, faculty members and students volunteers also planted saplings on the occasion.
