Tarigami welcomes release of Omar, demands release of other J&K detainees

Srinagar, Mar 24: Welcoming the release of former chief minister Omar Abdullah from detention after about eight months, senior CPI(M) leader Mohammad Yousuf Tarigami on Tuesday demanded the release of other political detainees, including PDP president Mehbooba Mufti.

Omar Abdullah was on Tuesday released after about eight months following revocation of his detention under Public Safety Act (PSA) by the J&K administration.

“CPI(M) welcomes the release of Omar Abdullah. But we have been urging upon the centre to release political leaders of all shades, particularly all those persons who have been put in different jails across the country, including J&K,” Mr Targami told UNI.

He said the government’s focus should be on combating Coronavirus and all the resources should be utilized to do so. “There is an uncertainty due to detention of youths in different jails. Some of the detainees were shifted to outside J&K jails and they are still languishing there. In prevailing situation, it is imperative on the government to set them free without any further delay,” he said.

It will be a welcomed step if at all the government decides to release them, he added.

Urging government to restore 4G internet services, he said it could provide some relief to the people, who are confined to their homes due to the threat of cornavirus.
