Uncertainty grips SMC amid COVID-19 pandemic

Srinagar, Jul 12 : As thousands of Srinagar Municipal Corporation employees work day and night to fight COVID-19 pandemic, uncertainty has gripped SMC with Srinagar Mayor Junaid Azim Mattoo alleged that some Corporators, held in a hotel, are making desperate calls to be rescued from imprisonment by Personal Security Officers (PSOs) of former deputy Mayor Sheikh Imran and BJP District President Ashok Bhat.

He alleged that BJP has sought a ‘Vote of No Confidence’ against him for the second time in six months.

The Srinagar Mayor said that the BJP group has claimed they have support from Congress and National Conference (NC). However, both Congress and NC have unambiguously denied the claims.

“Around 16 Corporators huddled inside in a pandemic without masks – without physical distancing at Hotel Grand Mahal in Shalimar. Some of them making desperate calls to be rescued. Imprisoned by PSOs of Mr. Sheikh Imran, BJP District President Ashoke Bhat and an SOG Truck outside,” the Srinagar Mayor tweeted.

Last year, Mr Mattoo survived a ‘Vote of No Confidence’.

He said that he has been informed that BJP has sought a ‘Vote of No Confidence’ in the SMC against me. “Those who have submitted the motion are either elected members/office bearers of BJP or unambiguously associated with BJP. This is the second such motion by BJP against me within 6 months,” he wrote.

“The BJP+ group has claimed they have support from @INCIndia and @JKNC_ – which both parties have clearly, officially and unambiguously denied. The incumbent Dy. Mayor @Parvaiz_Qadri has also denied these claims,” he added.

Mr Mattoo said there are also apprehensions of forged signatures on affidavits as well as attempts to break the law – since the 6 month bar since the last floor test hasn’t expired yet. “This is a repeat of what was attempted in SMC on 26th December, 2019,” he said.

The Srinagar Mayor said this is being done in the midst of an unprecedented pandemic is another travesty. “That it is being claimed and alleged that INC and BJP are on the same page is bizarre beyond comprehension and hints at some clear illegality and foul play,” he said.

“We will fight this democratically and legally as this is yet another litmus test for the mainstream,” he said, adding this is the second such attempt in six months and ‘we are certain of proving our majority and defeating this blatantly illegal, undemocratic maneuvering’.

“IF @BJP4India, @INCIndia and @JKNC_ are actually coming together to vote me out — I wear it as a badge of honour! BJP and Congress have never allied in the country’s history – and if they want to ally now against us – I couldn’t ask for a greater validation of my dignity,” he added.
