Traffic resumes on Srinagar-Jammu highway, down traffic on Mughal road

Srinagar, Jun 18 :Traffic was disrupted for several hours due to landslides on the national highway, the only all weather road connecting Kashmir valley with the rest of the country on Thursday.

Meanwhile, only down traffic will continue to ply on the historic 86-km-long Mughal road, connecting Shopian in south Kashmir with Poonch and Rajouri in Jammu region, a traffic police official told UNI. Even pedestrian movement is not allowed on the road, he said.

He said traffic on Srinagar-Jammu national highway was suspended due to landslides in Ramban area. However, the National highway Authority of India (NHAI) and Border Roads Organisation (BRO), responsible for the maintenance of the highway immediately put into service sophisticated machines and cleared the landslides and put through the highway.

Empty trucks and oil tankers besides other vehicles carrying fruit were allowed to move towards Jammu from here. Trucks loaded with essential commodities besides oil tankers will be allowed to move towards Kashmir later in the afternoon, he said.

However, he said, no passenger vehicle will be allowed to ply from either side of the highway. Passenger vehicles having valid pass issued by divisional commissioner, Kashmir and Jammu will be allowed to ply on the highway, he said. Because of COVID-19 pandemic, civilian passenger traffic is banned on the highway.

About movement of security force vehicles on the highway, he said security forces are advised to undertake the journey only after confirming the status of the road from Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) J S Johar.

He said only trucks carrying fresh fruit from different parts of the Kashmir valley were allowed to move from Shopian on Mughal road, which is seen as alternative to Srinagar-Jammu highway. Vehicles had to ply from 1100 hrs to 1600 hrs only. He said no civilian passenger vehicle will be allowed on the road. Even pedestrian are not allowed on the road, he added.
