‘Pro-Palestine’ Protests: 20 Persons Arrested In Srinagar
Srinagar, May 15 (GNS): At least twenty persons have been arrested in connection with pro-Palestine protest amid corona curfew here in Srinagar.
Official sources and reports reaching Global News Service (GNS) said that the police have arrested these persons from several places of Srinagar.
As per reports quoting Gaza’s health ministry, at least 122 Palestinians, including 31 children, have been killed and more than 900 wounded in Israeli action since the latest round of violence began.
Inspector General of Police Kashmir Vijay Kumar confirmed to GNS that arrest of 20 persons in Srinagar.
A police spokesman later said Srinagar that 20 individuals were arrested in connection with violation of “corona curfew”.
“It is pertinent to mention here that two protests were held in Padshahibagh and Koker Bazar areas of Srinagar on Friday on Palestine issue,” the spokesman said, adding, “The individuals were identified on basis of photography and videography done during the protests.”
Srinagar Police, he said, have appealed to the general public to strictly follow the COVID curfew and cooperate with police during this period.
Meanwhile the IGP Kashmir reiterated that Police was “keeping a very close watch on elements who are attempting to leverage the unfortunate situation in Palestine to disturb public peace and order in the Kashmir valley.”
“We are a professional force and are sensitive to public anguish. But J&K police has a legal responsibility to ensure law and order as well. It, however, wouldn’t allow cynical encashment of the public anger to trigger violence, lawlessness and disorder on Kashmir streets,” he said, adding, “Expressing opinion is a freedom but engineering and inciting violence on streets is unlawful. All irresponsible social media comments that results in actual violence and breaking of law including Covid protocol will attract legal action.” He said people are urged to cooperate.
