India records 2,38,018 new COVID cases, 20K less than previous day; Omicron tally increases to 8,891

New Delhi: India saw a single-day rise of 2,58,089 new COVID-19 cases, the Union Health Ministry on Tuesday said. The fatality count increased to 4,86,761 as 310 coronavirus patients lost their lives in the last 24 hours.

A total of 8,891 cases of the Omicron variant have been detected across 29 states and union territories, an increase of 8.31 per cent since yesterday, according to data updated at 8 am showed.

The number of active COVID-19 cases have increased to 17,36,628.

According to the latest data, 1,57,421 people recovered since yesterday, taking the total recoveries to 3,53,94,882.

The ministry stated that the active COVID cases account for 4.62 per cent of the total infections, while the national COVID-19 recovery rate has decreased to 94.09 per cent.

The health ministry said that the daily positivity rate was recorded at 14.43 per cent, while the weekly positivity rate stood at 14.92 per cent.

According to MoHFW, 158.04 crore vaccine doses have been administered so far under the nationwide vaccination drive against COVID.

As per the 8 am data, 16,49,143 coronavirus tests were conducted in the last 24 hours, taking the cumulative tests over 70.54 crores.
