People, civil society question sealing of medical store in Baramulla
Drug Control Officer Baramulla has “illegally” sealed the shop of a poor chemist and subsequently revoked his license. People including civil society members have demanded immediate action against the drug officer.
Distinguished persons and society members from Baramulla have expressed their resentment over the “unwarranted” closure of the New Afghan Medical Store at Baramulla in Kanspora by Drug Inspector Gowhar Ahmed Bhat. The respectable persons and the civil society members said that the action against a well-known medical store without any legal justification was a “reflection of the fact that corruption is being promoted directly in the name of drug control”. “How can someone go with the owners of other medical stores to visit Uri, Boniyar and other places? Who arranged and paid for this tour?” they said.
Locals requested the higher authorities to investigate on whose orders the said drug control officer took stern action against only one medical store and did not touch others, even remotely.
It may be recalled that Riyaz Ahmad Mughloo, the owner of New Afghan Medical Store has already alleged that the action was taken against him at the behest of other drug dealers who they said are in direct nexus with the concerned drug inspector.
Civil society members, meanwhile, said that on the day the drug inspector took action against the New Afghan Medical Store, he was on a sightseeing tour with other dealers. While he was sightseeing with qualified license holders, the patients were put to risk as the medical stores were manned by unqualified persons. However, the risk was taken only for sightseeing and the concerned Drug Control Officer and other concerned officers and staff did not take notice of the matter. “This sums the conspiracy and attitude of the drug inspector,” they said
Civil society and local respectable people have demanded an immediate inquiry into the matter from the LG administration and urged the district administration to review the activities of the Drug Control Department in Baramulla town. “The ‘perpetrator’ should be held accountable for action and it should be revealed as to whose behest livelihood of the poor medical store owner was snatched.” They also demanded that the drug license of Riyaz Ahmed Mughloo be restored by revoking the cancellation order and his store be de-sealed so that poor man earns livelihood.
