The picturesque hill station of Gulmarg, renowned for its breathtaking landscapes and vibrant tourism industry, is abuzz with renewed optimism following the appointment of Tahir Ijaz as the new Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Gulmarg Development Authority (GDA).

Local entrepreneurs and small business owners are expressing hopes for a supportive and empathetic approach from the new administration under Ijaz.

Adil Nazir, a prominent social activist and prospective electoral candidate, has extended a warm welcome to CEO Ijaz and highlighted the collective anticipation of local stakeholders.

Nazir pointed out that Ijaz, originally from Rajouri and currently residing in Rawalpura, Srinagar, might initially be less acquainted with the complexities of local issues. Therefore, Nazir and his associates are prepared to brief him on the challenges faced by the local business community.

The local working class, including hotel owners, shopkeepers, horsemen, transporters, and parking operators, has been instrumental in sustaining Gulmarg’s tourism industry despite challenging conditions over the past three decades.

Nazir emphasised that these individuals, who have managed to thrive on minimal income, deserve increased support and recognition, particularly as Gulmarg re-emerges as a leading international tourist destination.

Nazir also urged the new administration to take a firm stand against powerful groups that have illegally occupied hundreds of kanals of forest land, monopolising the tourism trade. He recalled that previous CEOs, including Raja Waseem, Hanif Balkhi, Shafqat Iqbal, Abdul Aziz Ratha, Inam ul Haq, and Ghulam Jilani, provided a sense of security and support to local businesses, which was crucial for the growth of Gulmarg's tourism sector.

The Ponywala Association, ATS Association, Transport Association, Traders Association, and Tourist Guide Association of Gulmarg, among other local groups, have expressed hope for similar positive engagement from the current GDA administration. They believe that continued support and fair treatment of small businesses are essential for the sustainable development of the region.

Nazir also acknowledged the vital role of the police in maintaining peace and order from Tangmarg to Gulmarg, ensuring the safety of tourists, and addressing their needs. He urged the GDA staff to adopt a similar approach to contribute to Gulmarg’s development.

Nazir called on the GDA to adopt a compassionate and decisive stance against illegal land occupations and to show empathy towards those affected. He assured that the local community is closely monitoring the actions of the new administration and remains hopeful for a fair and just approach that will promote continued growth and prosperity for Gulmarg.

As Gulmarg stands on the brink of renewed success, the collaboration between the new CEO and the local business community will be crucial in shaping the future of this beloved tourist destination.
