J&K LG Expected to Nominate Five BJP MLAs Ahead of RS Elections
The Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor is expected to nominate five BJP members as Members of the Legislative Assembly, based on recommendations from the Union Ministry of Home Affairs.
Unlike the previous arrangement where two women were nominated without voting rights, these new nominees will have a say in legislative matters.
However, their votes will not impact the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections, as the National Conference-Congress alliance holds at least 55 seats, compared to the BJP's 29. In the upcoming elections for two Rajya Sabha seats, analysts predict a split victory, with the BJP likely to secure one seat and the alliance winning the other two.
This marks only the second time the BJP will secure a Rajya Sabha seat in J&K, following its previous win in 2015 alongside the PDP. The four Rajya Sabha seats have remained vacant since the Assembly was dissolved in 2021.
As a result, the National Conference could have three Lok Sabha and three Rajya Sabha members, while the BJP could have two Lok Sabha and one elected Rajya Sabha member. The BJP’s challenges stem from losing 14 of 43 seats in Jammu and failing to win any of the 47 seats in Kashmir.
