GST Enforcement South Kashmir Imposes Rs. 2.62 Crore in Penalties

The GST Enforcement Team of South Kashmir has made significant strides in tackling tax violations, imposing penalties totaling Rs. 2.62 crore for the financial year 2023-24. This represents a 26% increase compared to the previous year, reflecting the enhanced efforts in curbing GST-related offenses.

Penalties were levied on erring traders found transporting goods in violation of the GST Act and Rules. Notably, the enforcement actions showed a marked improvement, with penalties growing by 46%, 18%, and 25% in the first, second, and third quarters respectively, as compared to the previous financial year.

Further highlighting the success of the enforcement drives, growth rates of 182%, 113%, and 28% were recorded in April, July, and October 2024, respectively.

In an official press release, the Enforcement team credited the leadership of Deputy Commissioner, State Taxes Enforcement, South Kashmir, Mr. Waseem Raja (JKAS), who operates under the supervision of Commissioner State Taxes, Mr. P.K. Bhat (JKAS). Mr. Raja praised his team’s dedication and success, stating that future enforcement activities would be intensified to ensure greater deterrence and compliance.

The rigorous enforcement operations are carried out round-the-clock by four specialized teams across South Kashmir's districts of Anantnag, Kulgam, Shopian, and Pulwama. These teams work under the guidance of senior state tax officers, including Mr. Aadil Yousuf Wani (JKAS), Mr. Chander Badan Khajuria, Mr. Suraj Parkash (JKAS), and Mr. Gulzar Ahmad Mir, with additional support from field staff, including inspectors, sub-inspectors, and guards.

The enforcement activities particularly focused on high-risk commodities such as metal scrap, cement, marble, plywood, timber, TMT bars, hardware items, motor parts, electrical goods, and readymade garments. Between April and November 2024, over 200,000 e-way bills were verified, marking a 45% increase compared to the same period in the previous financial year.

The Commissioner, State Taxes Department, has lauded the Enforcement Team South Kashmir for achieving this milestone, emphasizing the department’s commitment to maintaining a high level of vigilance and ensuring compliance with tax regulations.
