J&K CM Omar Warns of Worsening Water Shortage
Jammu and Kashmir is heading towards a serious water crisis, with Chief Minister Omar Abdullah stressing the need for urgent intervention from both the government and the public.
The Chief Minister acknowledged that the crisis has been escalating over the past few years and emphasized that it cannot be tackled by the government alone.
"J&K is staring at a water crisis this year. It’s not a recent phenomenon, actually, it’s been building up for a few years now. While the government will have to adopt a more proactive approach for water management & conservation, it can’t just be a government-centric approach. All of us, residents of J&K, will have to change the way we take water for granted," Abdullah wrote on X.
The CM announced that he would personally review the measures being planned by the Jal Shakti (Public Health Engineering) Department to mitigate the worsening situation. Additionally, he stated that he would engage with the public over the next few months to discuss collective efforts to address the crisis.
Jammu and Kashmir, heavily reliant on glaciers and rivers, has been witnessing erratic weather patterns, declining groundwater levels, and increasing demand for water. Experts have repeatedly warned about depleting water resources, urging comprehensive conservation strategies and sustainable usage practices. [KNT]
