JKCSF & JKPUF Acknowledge Positive Initiatives in J&K Budget, Urge Further Improvements

The Jammu & Kashmir Civil Society Forum (JKCSF) and the Jammu & Kashmir Pensioners United Front (JKPUF), led by Abdul Qayoom Wani, have acknowledged the maiden budget presented by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, recognizing it as a positive initiative despite the challenging circumstances and limited powers.

The Rs 1.12 lakh crore budget prioritizes inclusive growth and welfare, with key measures such as 10 kg of free ration for AAY beneficiaries, 200 units of free electricity for AAY families, free ridership for women on government transport, enhancement of the Marriage Assistance Scheme, and zero stamp duty on property transfers to blood relatives. These provisions reflect a commitment to social justice, economic relief, and gender empowerment.

While praising the government's focus on fiscal prudence and economic expansion, JKCSF and JKPUF called attention to areas that require further improvement. They emphasized the need to extend the electricity rebate to the middle class, regularize casual laborers, create more employment opportunities for unemployed youth, and implement the Senior Citizens Act. Additionally, the disparity in medical allowances between J&K, Ladakh UT, and central government employees—promised in the election manifesto—remains unaddressed.

The organizations also pointed out that the plight of daily wagers and need-based workers has not been adequately addressed in the budget. They stressed that these concerns must be incorporated into future policies.

In their statement, JKCSF and JKPUF made it clear that they do not criticize for the sake of criticism but seek to contribute constructively. They urged the government to ensure transparent and accountable implementation of the budget provisions, while addressing the concerns of all sections of society to achieve a truly equitable and prosperous Jammu & Kashmir.
