Allama Hami Calls for Action Against Alcohol, Drug Abuse in Kashmir
In a powerful address delivered at the Central Khanqah Sheikh-ul-Alam (RA) in Drigam Budgam during the Jummah congregation, Allama Dr. Ghulam Rasool Hami, the Patron-in-Chief of Karwan-e-Islami International, called for renewed focus on supporting genuine individuals and causes during the holy month of Ramadan.
While Ramadan is a time of mercy, forgiveness, and charity, Allama Hami expressed concern over the exploitation of this sacred time by professional beggars who deceive the public by posing as the needy.
“Allama Hami emphasized that many individuals, operating under false pretenses, take advantage of the goodwill of simple-hearted people, collecting donations and zakat under the guise of fake patients or imaginary causes. Unfortunately, this leaves those who are truly deserving, including the poor and legitimate welfare organizations, without the support they need,” he said.
The spiritual leader urged the faithful to be vigilant and avoid falling into the trap of fraudulent beggars. He stressed that charity and donations should be directed towards authentic causes—genuine individuals in need and recognized organizations adhering to Islamic principles. "By ensuring that our acts of charity fulfill their true purpose, we offer real support to those who need it most," he added.
In addition to addressing charity, Allama Hami also expressed his deep concern over the alarming rise of alcohol and drug abuse in the Kashmir Valley, a region known for its rich spiritual heritage. He condemned the increasing spread of these harmful substances, calling it an affront to the sanctity of a land historically home to revered saints and spiritual figures.
"The justification of alcohol and drug use in this blessed region is tragic and shameful. It exacerbates the moral and social decay in our society," said Allama Hami. He warned that the proliferation of alcohol and drugs destroys the moral fabric of society, damages the younger generation, and impedes the region's development. "These substances contribute nothing positive to our culture; instead, they promote vice and vulgarity."
Allama Hami's message was clear: urgent action is needed to address the growing drug and alcohol abuse in Kashmir. His call to those in power was emphatic: it is time to prioritize the welfare of the youth and take swift, decisive action to eliminate the scourge of drugs and alcohol from the region.
As the holy month of Ramadan continues, Allama Hami urged the community to stand together, ensuring that charitable actions benefit only the truly deserving. "We must protect the sanctity of our land for future generations," he concluded, stressing that now is the time to take responsibility and make a real difference.
