CME & Resident Research Orientation Program Held at SKIMS in Collaboration with NAMS

In a significant step towards promoting academic excellence and research culture among budding medical professionals, the Sher-i-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS), in collaboration with the National Academy of Medical Sciences (NAMS), organized a Continuing Medical Education (CME) and Resident Research Orientation Programme today at the SKIMS Auditorium.

The event, jointly coordinated by NAMS-SKIMS and the SKIMS Research Cell, aimed to orient newly inducted residents towards ethical medical practice, patient workup, and the foundational principles of clinical research. The programme sought to instill the values of professionalism, academic integrity, and scientific inquiry among the future clinicians and researchers of SKIMS.

Despite travel disruptions caused by weather, Prof. Umesh Kapil, Secretary of NAMS, delivered a virtual keynote address that underscored the deepening collaboration between NAMS and SKIMS. His message inspired residents to uphold the highest standards of research and ethical medical practice.

The event featured distinguished speakers and guests, including Prof. Subrata Baidya, Head of Community Medicine at GMC Agartala, who served as the Guest of Honour. He delivered an engaging session on communication skills and medical ethics — key competencies for modern medical professionals.

A major highlight of the programme was the Mentor Talk delivered by Prof. Khalid Shah, Professor at Harvard Medical University, known globally for his groundbreaking research in cancer and brain tumors. His address offered valuable insights into the journey of a researcher and the global impact of scientific perseverance.

Speaking on the occasion, Prof. Mohammad Ashraf Ganie, Director SKIMS and EOSG, who also served as the Chief Patron of the event, emphasized SKIMS’ commitment to nurturing a new generation of clinician-scientists. He highlighted the critical role of mentors in shaping the careers of young doctors and promoting innovation in patient care.

Principal SKIMS Medical College, Prof. Fazlul Qadir Parray, and former Dean SKIMS Medical Faculty, Prof. Shariq Masoodi, also delivered inspiring talks on the integration of research and clinical excellence.

The event was successfully coordinated by:

  • Prof. Ajaz Malik, HOD General Surgery – Organizing Chairman

  • Prof. Showkat Gurcoo, HOD Anaesthesiology – Co-Organizing Chairman

  • Dr. Syed Mudasir Qadri, Additional Professor, General Medicine – Organizing Secretary

  • Dr. Shahnawaz Hamid, Assistant Professor, Hospital Administration – Co-Organizing Secretary

The programme marks another milestone in SKIMS’ vision to develop world-class medical professionals and researchers who contribute meaningfully to the global health landscape.
