Pahalgam Attack: AIP Demands End to Collective Punishment in Assembly
In a strongly worded address on the floor of the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly, AIP senior leader and MLA Langate Sheikh Khursheed condemned the recent terror attack in Pahalgam that claimed the lives of 26 civilians, demanding immediate justice for the victims and their families.
Calling the attack an assault on peace and harmony in the region, Khursheed also sought justice for the families of civilians killed in separate incidents in Kandi (Kupwara) and Ajas (Bandipora), urging the government to initiate thorough inquiries into these killings.
"The loss of innocent lives continues to remind us of the fragile state of security and trust in the Valley," he said.
Amid rising tensions, Khursheed reiterated the AIP's long-standing demand for the restoration of Jammu and Kashmir’s statehood, stating that political dignity and autonomy are essential for lasting peace. “The restoration of statehood is not just a political demand—it’s a necessity for safeguarding our future,” he told the House.
He sharply criticized the demolition of residential houses belonging to suspected militants, calling it collective punishment that inflicts suffering on entire families and communities. “Blasting homes in retaliation is not justice; it is vengeance that deepens divisions,” he said, demanding an immediate halt to such practices.
Khurshid also denounced a recent incident at Lal Chowk, where Islam was allegedly insulted by miscreants. He called on authorities to investigate and prosecute those involved, stating that communal hate had no place in society.
Expressing serious concern over the increasing harassment of Kashmiri students outside the Valley, Khursheed urged the government to take swift action to protect students and ensure their right to safety and education is upheld.
“We are here to defend the rights of the people we represent. I will continue to raise Langate’s voice for justice, peace, and the rightful restoration of our statehood,” he concluded.
