On World Press Freedom Day, the Jammu and Kashmir Civil Society Forum (JKCSF) expressed full support for Chief Minister Omar Abdullah's call to protect press freedom, recognizing it as the cornerstone of a thriving democracy.
Abdullah’s appeal, emphasizing the need to safeguard press freedom not just in rhetoric but through meaningful actions, resonates with all democratic institutions and civil society stakeholders.
In a statement, Abdul Qayoom Wani, Chairman of JKCSF, paid tribute to journalists for their courage and commitment, particularly in Jammu and Kashmir’s challenging and volatile environment. "Journalists in Jammu and Kashmir have worked tirelessly, often at great personal risk, to inform the public and expose the truth," Wani said. “Their work is vital in upholding democratic values, transparency, and accountability.”
Wani stressed the importance of collective responsibility in creating a safe and open environment for media professionals, where they can operate without fear of censorship or intimidation. He called on the government, institutions, and society to stand in solidarity with journalists and ensure justice in instances of harassment or threats faced by the media.
JKCSF reiterated its steadfast commitment to defending press freedom, affirming that independent journalism is a fundamental pillar of a just, transparent, and democratic society. The forum pledged to continue advocating for the protection of journalists' rights and the vital role they play in fostering accountability and truth.
