India Launches ‘Operation Sindoor’ in Response to Pahalgam Terror Attack
In a decisive move following the brutal terrorist attack in Pahalgam on April 22, India has launched Operation Sindoor, a targeted and pre-emptive military operation aimed at dismantling Pakistan-based terrorist infrastructure.
Further updates on Operation Sindoorl press briefing led by Foreign Secretary Shri Vikram Misri, marks a significant escalation in India’s counter-terrorism posture.
Addressing the media, Misri confirmed that the attack in Pahalgam—claimed by The Resistance Front (TRF), a proxy for the UN-proscribed Lashkar-e-Taiba—resulted in the deaths of 26 civilians, including a Nepalese national. The victims, many of whom were Indian tourists, were reportedly shot at close range in front of their families, underscoring the barbarity of the act.
“This was the deadliest terror attack on civilians in India since the 26/11 Mumbai attacks,” Misri stated, adding that the assault was intended to disrupt the return of normalcy in Jammu and Kashmir, specifically targeting the region's booming tourism sector, which drew 23 million visitors in 2024.
India had earlier flagged the TRF in reports to the UN’s 1267 Sanctions Committee in May and November 2024, warning of its role as a front for Pakistani terror groups like Lashkar-e-Taiba and Jaish-e-Mohammad. The government's investigation into the April 22 attack has reportedly yielded substantial evidence linking the perpetrators to handlers across the border.
“The attackers' communications, TRF’s public claims, and reposting by Lashkar-linked handles all point to clear cross-border coordination,” Misri revealed. “Despite international condemnation, including a UN Security Council statement on April 25, Pakistan has taken no demonstrable steps to dismantle the terrorist infrastructure on its soil.”
With intelligence suggesting further imminent attacks, the government authorized Operation Sindoor early this morning. According to Misri, the operation was “measured, proportionate, non-escalatory, and focused solely on disabling terrorist launchpads and neutralizing imminent threats.”
Joining the briefing, Colonel Sophia Qureshi and Wing Commander Vyomika Singh are expected to share operational details shortly.
Misri emphasized that India's response aligns with international calls for accountability. “We are acting within our rights to defend our citizens and bring the perpetrators of the Pahalgam attack to justice,” he said, quoting the UN Security Council’s call to hold “perpetrators, organisers, financiers, and sponsors of this reprehensible act of terrorism accountable.”
Further updates on Operation Sindoor are expected to follow from the Ministry of Defence and the armed forces.
