India Voices Concern Over Ban on Awami League, Calls for Free and Inclusive Elections in Bangladesh

India on Tuesday expressed concern over the reported ban on the Awami League in Bangladesh, stating that any curtailment of democratic freedoms and political space in the neighboring country is a cause for serious attention.

In a statement, an official spokesperson said, “The ban on the Awami League without due process is a concerning development. As a democracy, India is naturally concerned at the curtailment of democratic freedoms and shrinking political space.”

India called for the early conduct of elections that are transparent and representative. “We strongly support the early holding of free, fair and inclusive elections in Bangladesh,” the spokesperson added.

While New Delhi has traditionally maintained close ties with the Awami League-led government, the recent developments have prompted diplomatic concern amid growing international scrutiny of political freedoms in Bangladesh.

The statement reflects India’s broader regional approach, which emphasizes democratic stability and institutional legitimacy in South Asia.
