Junaid Mir Accuses NC Govt of ‘Politically Sabotaging’ GMC Handwara Project

President of Jammu and Kashmir Workers Party, Junaid Mir today launched a scathing attack on the National Conference-led government accusing it of sabotaging the much-awaited Government Medical College (GMC) Handwara project for political reasons.

Addressing a news conference, Mir, according to KPS,  said, “I want to teel Omar Sahib (J&K Chief Minister)  if our country can stop water to Pakistan, then what’s the big deal about taking acre of the flood channel which NC-led government is citing as a reason to shift this college. The flood channel can be dredged and it can be widened. The flood channel is just an excuse, nothing more.”

Mir said that the issue surrounding GMC Handwara is not administrative but political, involving a Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah. “The Home Minister wants GMC Handwara to be built at the very location where he laid its foundation stone. However, the Chief Minister wants to shift the college elsewhere as he is unable to digest that Amit Shah initiated this project. It appears he wants to erase Shah’s association with it,” Mir alleged.

In a message to the residents of Handwara, Mir said he would take up the matter personally with Union Home Minister Amit Shah. “I assure the people of Handwara that GMC Handwara will not go anywhere. It will come up at the very site where the Home Minister laid its foundation stone,” he said.

Mir reiterated that the issue was not just about a building but about the people’s faith in governance and the responsible use of public funds. “Let’s see who prevails—Amit Shah or Omar Abdullah. But we won’t allow the aspirations of Handwara to be bulldozed,” he said.

He expressed serious concern over the potential wastage of public money if the college is relocated. “Nearly Rs 50 crore have already been spent on the building. If this college is shifted, Rs 50 crore will be wasted. Who will be accountable for that? If the government goes ahead with this, then the CM and his cabinet should personally compensate for the loss,” he demanded.

Mir also issued a sharp warning to those within the administration allegedly supporting the move, asserting that the era of impunity is over. “The taxpayers’ money spent on GMC Handwara belongs to the people. If this money is wasted deliberately, it should be recovered from the officials and politicians involved. This is a fit case for a CBI and ACB inquiry,” he said.

Highlighting the aspirations of the people of Handwara, Mir said that the town had dreamt of this medical college transforming their future. “The people of Handwara voted for development and solutions, not for their dreams to be crushed. I want to ask Omar sahib—are you running the government or sabotaging governance and development?” he questioned. (KPS)
