Expressing deep concern over the growing menace of liquor consumption and drug abuse across Jammu and Kashmir, Allama Dr. Ghulam Rasool Hami, President of Karwani Islami International, has urged the government and all political parties to take immediate and decisive action to eradicate the problem.
Delivering his Friday sermon at the Central Jamia Masjid, Arizal Khan Sahib, which was attended by thousands of devotees, Allama Hami said that society—both in urban and rural areas—has been gravely affected by the destructive spread of addiction, leaving families and communities in distress.
He emphasized that in a democratic setup, citizens place their trust in an elected government to address key social issues and uphold moral values, and therefore it is both a moral and administrative duty of the authorities to act against the proliferation of drugs and alcohol.
“The people of Jammu and Kashmir had reposed faith in the present government with the expectation that it would work towards building a morally upright and progressive society,” Allama Hami said. “Among the foremost public concerns is the prohibition of immoral practices such as liquor and drug consumption — an objective that no person of conscience can oppose.”
Calling upon legislators and political representatives irrespective of party affiliations, Allama Hami appealed for a united and humanitarian approach to tackle the crisis. He urged them to exert collective pressure on the government to introduce stringent legal measures for the prohibition and prevention of liquor and drug abuse.
Warning of the grave consequences of inaction, Allama Hami noted that several towns and villages have already fallen prey to addiction. “If effective legislation is not enacted soon, the entire society — particularly the youth — will face devastating repercussions,” he cautioned.
Reiterating his appeal, Allama Hami called on the government to treat the issue as a top social priority and ensure the immediate implementation of strict laws to safeguard the moral fabric and future of the society.
