Allama Hami Urges J&K Government to Enact Ban on Alcohol and Narcotics

Prominent Islamic scholar and head of Karwani Islami International, Allama Dr. Ghulam Rasool Hami, has called upon the Jammu and Kashmir administration to immediately introduce legislation banning the sale and consumption of alcohol and narcotic substances in the Union Territory.

Addressing a large gathering at the historic Central Jamia Masjid Zeyrun, Kangan (Ganderbal) on the occasion of Jumu’ah, Allama Hami expressed deep concern over what he described as government inaction on a pressing social issue. He noted that despite the passage of a full year, “not a single constructive debate or legislative step” has been taken toward curbing the growing menace of alcohol and drug abuse.

“The people of Jammu and Kashmir had high hopes that the incumbent administration would enact strict laws to stop the spread of these social evils,” he said. “However, it is unfortunate that no such initiative has been undertaken so far.”

Allama Hami urged both the ruling and opposition parties to rise above political differences and “fulfil their constitutional and moral responsibility” by passing a robust law to prohibit the trade and consumption of intoxicants in the Valley.

He reminded the gathering that the region of Jammu and Kashmir has historically been guided by Sunnah-abiding scholars, Sufi saints, and Rishis, whose teachings emphasized purity, moral integrity, and spiritual discipline. “The Kashmiri nation has always drawn strength and guidance from God-fearing saints and enlightened spiritual masters,” he said, urging people to continue following their path for success in this world and the hereafter.

Allama Hami reiterated that political will, coupled with public awareness, is essential to restore the moral and spiritual well-being of society.
