The Jammu & Kashmir unit of the Janata Dal United (JDU) has welcomed the Central Government’s decision to enhance MGNREGA person-days to 150 for the Union Territory, terming the move timely and transformative.
In an official statement, JDU Party President G.M. Shaheen expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Rural Development Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, and Minister of State Ram Nath Thakur for approving the enhancement. Shaheen said the decision comes at a critical moment when 1,962 Panchayats in J&K have been declared flood-affected, resulting in severe disruption to livelihoods and damage to rural infrastructure.
He noted that the UT administration had urgently appealed to the Centre for special relief measures. “The announcement reflects the Union Government’s firm resolve and administrative commitment to safeguard vulnerable communities,” Shaheen said.
Calling the decision decisive and impactful, he added that the increased MGNREGA workdays would help stabilise incomes of affected rural families, strengthen livelihood security, and accelerate the creation of durable public assets in flood-hit regions.
Shaheen further stated that the move underscores the Modi Government’s consistent focus on rural empowerment, resilience building, and equitable development across Jammu & Kashmir.
