In a major boost to rail connectivity in western Uttar Pradesh, Union Minister for Railways, Information & Broadcasting, and Electronics & IT Ashwini Vaishnaw, along with Union Minister of State for Skill Development & Entrepreneurship Jayant Chaudhary, on Monday flagged off two new MEMU train services between Delhi Junction–Shamli–Delhi Junction and Delhi Shahdara–Shamli–Delhi Shahdara from Baraut railway station.
The event was attended by Baghpat MP Rajkumar Sangwan, former MP Dr. Satyapal Singh, MLC Mohit Beniwal, MLA Krishna Pal Malik, and Baraut Municipal Council Chairperson Babita Tomar.
Boost to Connectivity and Commuter Convenience
Addressing a large gathering, Shri Vaishnaw said the new MEMU services would significantly benefit daily commuters, students, farmers, and professionals, offering improved mobility and more travel choices. He added that Shamli station is being upgraded to a world-class facility at a cost of ₹25 crore under the Amrit Bharat Station Yojana.
Calling it a long-awaited moment for the region, the Minister said, “Under the guidance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Indian Railways is continuously striving to provide better passenger services. The new MEMU trains will make travel easier for the people of the Shamli–Baghpat region.”
Major Announcement Draws Applause
Shri Vaishnaw’s announcement regarding the doubling of the Delhi–Shamli rail line was met with loud applause from the crowd. Leaders on stage also expressed gratitude for the fulfilment of this decades-old regional demand.
Rail Infrastructure Growth in Uttar Pradesh
Highlighting the rapid expansion of rail infrastructure in the state, the Minister said:
5,272 km of new tracks have been built in Uttar Pradesh since 2014—equivalent to the entire rail network of Switzerland.
100% electrification of all railway lines has been completed.
1,460 flyovers and underbridges have been constructed.
WiFi is now available at 771 stations.
154 elevators and 156 escalators have been installed for passenger convenience.
34 Vande Bharat Express and 26 Amrit Bharat Express trains are currently operating in the state.
The launch of the new MEMU trains and the doubling announcement mark significant strides toward improving connectivity, economic activity, and passenger comfort across the region.
