Sufis, Rishis Shaped Kashmir’s Culture of Coexistence, Says Allama Hami

Allama Dr. Ghulam Rasool Hami, Chief of Karwani Islami International, on Friday highlighted the enduring legacy of Kashmir’s Sufis and Rishis as the true custodians of unity and social harmony in the region. Delivering his sermon at Central Jamia Masjid, Jamnagri Shopian, Dr. Hami said that Kashmir’s centuries-old traditions of inclusiveness and peaceful coexistence owe their strength to the noble teachings of these revered spiritual figures. The gathering witnessed a large turnout of worshippers.

Dr. Hami said that despite the diversity of beliefs and ideologies, the people of Kashmir have historically lived together with warmth, mutual respect, and a shared social, cultural, and economic life. He noted that the timeless guidance of the Sufi saints and Rishis laid the moral foundation of the Kashmiri ethos, fostering an environment where unity and brotherhood transcend all differences.

Reflecting on their teachings, he emphasized that the spiritual influence of the Rishis and Sufis continues to inspire the people of the valley even today. This enduring heritage, he said, is the reason Kashmiris are globally admired for their generosity, foresight, and unmatched hospitality.

During his sermon, Dr. Hami also expressed optimism over the decline in drug abuse across Jammu and Kashmir, crediting coordinated efforts by social organizations, institutions, and government agencies. Calling this decline a “ray of hope,” he urged for sustained and intensified efforts to fully eliminate drug addiction, which he described as a “satanic pursuit” aimed at weakening society from within.

He appealed to parents to provide strong moral upbringing to their children and to connect them with the teachings of saints and Awliya Allah, enabling them to differentiate between right and wrong and contribute positively to building a morally conscious and prosperous society.
