Mann Govt Using Special Session as PR Stunt, Says BJP’s Tarun Chugh

Senior BJP leader Tarun Chugh on Tuesday accused the Aam Aadmi Party-led Mann government in Punjab of indulging in “PR stunts” by convening a special Assembly session over the VB-G Ram Ji law, asserting that the legislation is aimed at strengthening rural welfare and accountability, not weakening it.

In a statement, Chugh said the VB-G Ram Ji law has been introduced to build a Viksit Bharat from the grassroots by enhancing benefits for rural workers. He highlighted that the law provides for 125 days of guaranteed employment instead of 100, backed by a record allocation of ₹1.51 lakh crore, including over ₹95,000 crore from the Centre. He said the legislation also ensures technology-based monitoring, transparent payments and integration with the PM Gati Shakti framework to improve efficiency and accountability.

Chugh alleged that Congress, AAP and their allies are opposing the law without understanding its provisions. He said the Punjab government’s special session against a law passed after more than 23 hours of parliamentary debate, involving over 130 MPs, amounts to “political grandstanding” rather than a genuine debate.

The BJP leader further alleged large-scale corruption under MNREGA in Punjab, claiming that crores of rupees were siphoned off through contractor networks. He said audits were conducted in only 5,915 of the state’s 13,304 panchayats, uncovering over 10,600 financial irregularities, but no major recoveries or punitive action followed.

Chugh asserted that the new law aims to end corruption, ensure that funds reach workers directly, and eliminate the role of middlemen. He said the BJP remains committed to transparency, developed villages and a developed India.
