Month-Old Infant Dies at SDH Uri, Family Alleges Medical Negligence

A one-month-old infant died at Sub-District Hospital (SDH) Uri on Sunday, with the bereaved family alleging medical negligence on the part of doctors posted at the hospital.

The deceased infant has been identified as Asger Ali, son of Mehboob Mughal, a resident of Bandi Uri.

A close relative of the family, Sajid Ahmad, talking to GNS, alleged that the child was brought to SDH Uri in the morning in a critical condition but was not examined properly by the doctors. He claimed that the family was instead advised to seek treatment at a private facility, resulting in a delay that proved fatal.

“They wasted crucial time. The doctors neither conducted a thorough check-up nor provided timely treatment,” the family alleged.

When contacted, BMO Uri Balvinder Singh denied the allegations. "The infant was brought to the hospital in a very critical condition and was provided medical attention as per protocol," he said, adding "Our doctors examined the child and advised immediate referral to Government Medical College (GMC) Baramulla for advanced treatment."

The BMO further added that instead of proceeding to the referred government facility, the family chose to visit a private paediatrician.

The medical officer in the meantime also informed that an inquiry committee has been constituted to look into the matter and ascertain the facts surrounding the incident.

Further details are awaited. (GNS)
