Sectarianism Contrary to Islam, says Hami

Chief of Karwani Islami International, Allama Dr Ghulam Rasool Hami, on Friday said the holy month of Ramadan is a time for spiritual renewal, equality, mutual empathy and strengthening God-consciousness (taqwa), and asserted that sectarianism and extremism are contrary to Islamic teachings.

Addressing thousands of people at the Central Jamia Masjid in Wusan, Kangan in Ganderbal district, Hami said Ramadan brings immense blessings and serves as an opportunity for self-accountability and moral reform.

He said Muslims are obligated during the month to assess their actions and resolve to improve both their personal and public lives. “The purpose of Ramadan is not only to perform righteous deeds but to uphold the limits set by Allah so that the same standard of life can be maintained throughout the year,” he said.

In a special message on the arrival of Ramadan, Hami described the month as one marked by goodness and well-being, urging people to seek forgiveness and spiritual growth.

Explaining the objectives of fasting, he said Ramadan places strong emphasis on virtuous conduct and aims to permanently instill taqwa in individuals. He added that the month also strengthens social bonds based on equality and brotherhood, contributing to peace and harmony in society.

Hami said Islam, as a universal religion, rejects extremism and sectarian divisions and upholds human values and rights. He expressed concern that despite the need for unity within the Muslim community, some individuals continue to inflame differences and create discord.

“Distorting points of disagreement and spreading doubts among the public does not serve the interests of religion or the community,” he said, calling for unity and tolerance despite differences.

The scholar also highlighted the social and moral lessons of Ramadan, including empathy, generosity and collective responsibility.

He further stressed the need for complete eradication of drug abuse and drug trafficking, urging influential members of society to take responsibility in addressing the issue. He appealed to the public to intensify efforts to curb drug use and contribute to building a healthier society.
