The Government of Jammu and Kashmir has claimed that it has initiated online registration of births and deaths across the Union Territory through the Civil Registration System portal of the Office of the Registrar General of India, officials said.
Authorities stated that the move is aimed at streamlining documentation and ensuring transparency in the issuance of vital records. The online platform enables citizens to apply for and obtain certificates digitally, reducing procedural delays and improving accessibility.
According to official figures, nearly two lakh birth certificates and around 60,000 death certificates are issued annually through the CRS portal in Jammu and Kashmir. The system also facilitates delayed registrations of births and deaths, allowing applicants to regularise records that were not registered within the stipulated timeframe.
Officials said the digitisation of civil registration services is part of broader governance reforms intended to strengthen public service delivery and maintain accurate demographic data. The online mechanism is expected to minimise manual intervention, curb discrepancies and create a centralised database for better administrative monitoring.
The government maintained that the initiative has significantly improved efficiency in certificate issuance and has provided relief to applicants who earlier had to visit offices for documentation and follow-up procedures. [KNT]
