BJP National General Secretary Tarun Chugh on Tuesday welcomed the decision of the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) to approve Rs 1,677 crore for the expansion and development of the civil enclave at Srinagar International Airport, terming it a landmark step towards strengthening infrastructure and economic growth in Jammu and Kashmir.
In a statement, Chugh said that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the government continues to prioritise connectivity and development in the Kashmir Valley.
The proposed project includes construction of an integrated terminal building spread over 73 acres, with a total built-up area of 71,500 square metres. Once completed, the airport’s passenger handling capacity will increase to 10 million annually, with the ability to manage 2,900 passengers during peak hours.
The plan also предусматри augmentation of apron space to accommodate up to 15 aircraft and the development of a multi-level car parking facility for nearly 1,000 vehicles, aimed at bringing the airport infrastructure at par with global standards.
Chugh said the expansion would significantly boost tourism and economic activity in the region by improving access to key destinations such as Dal Lake, Shankaracharya Temple and the Mughal Gardens. He added that the project is expected to generate substantial employment opportunities during both the construction and operational phases.
Highlighting the sustainability aspects of the project, Chugh noted that it incorporates provisions for water harvesting, energy-efficient systems and the use of eco-friendly materials, with a target of achieving a 5-star GRIHA rating.
He expressed gratitude to the Prime Minister and the Union Cabinet for the decision, stating that it reflects the government’s commitment to ushering in a new era of prosperity and stability in Jammu and Kashmir.
