The second phase of the Parliament’s Budget Session is set to resume on Monday amid expectations of a heated start, with the Lok Sabha likely to take up an opposition-backed resolution seeking the removal of Speaker Om Birla.
The opposition has accused Birla of acting in a partisan manner during House proceedings and has moved a notice demanding his removal. The matter is listed for discussion in the Lok Sabha’s business for the day.
Apart from the motion against the Speaker, several other issues are expected to dominate the session, including the ongoing tensions in West Asia, India’s stance on developments involving Iran and the United States, and the impact of rising crude oil prices following the regional conflict.
Opposition parties are also likely to raise concerns over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in poll-bound West Bengal, where the deletion of a large number of votes has sparked political debate.
Meanwhile, the government is expected to push key legislative business during the remaining part of the Budget session, including the proposed Electricity Amendment Bill, along with other pending matters from the first half of the session.
Both the BJP and Congress have issued whips to their MPs to remain present in the House during the discussion on the resolution. However, with the ruling alliance holding a numerical advantage, the motion is unlikely to succeed.
The Lok Sabha may also witness brief paying tributes to Shillong MP Ricky Syngkon, who passed away last month.
