Statehood Can’t Be Held Hostage to BJP Rule, Says Omar

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Saturday said the restoration of Jammu and Kashmir's statehood cannot be made contingent on the BJP forming the government, asserting that the Centre must honour its commitment after the completion of delimitation and Assembly elections.

Addressing a National Conference gathering in Srinagar, Omar announced a party protest at Jantar Mantar on July 20 to press for statehood. He also alleged that an NC MLA was offered ₹20–30 crore, a ministerial berth and a promise of statehood to defect from the party, while urging the BJP to clearly state its position if it does not intend to restore statehood under the present government.
