Relocate brick kilns, install SILS at Srinagar Airport, orders High Court

Srinagar: Directing relocation of brick kilns and installation of Simple Approach Lighting System (SALS) at Srinagar International Aitport, Jammu and Kashmir High Court (HC) said this could help landing of planes even during the period from October to March when visibility reduces at the airport.

The HC direction came after it was informed that presence of smoke emanating from the brick kilns located in the central Kashmir district of Budgam, reduces visibility from October to March at Srinagar Airport affecting air traffic.

A division bench of the High Court, comprising Chief Justice Badar Durrez Ahmed and Justice Ali Muhammad Magrey, directed Divisional Commissioner, Kashmir and Deputy Commissioner, Budgam, to take appropriate steps for re-location of these brick kilns.

The court, after being informed by the Indian Air Force (IAF) and Airports Authority of India (AAI) that 300 meters of land which is available within the boundary before runway could be utilized for setting up a SALS, ordered that the suggestion be implemented immediately.

However, the IAF and AAI in their status report informed the court that the survey data of feasibility of utilizing the land at lower levels of the airport was not so far submitted by the DC Budgam.

Directing the DC Budgam to supply the survey data to IAF and AAI within a week, the court said both the agencies shall later submit their report regarding feasibility of utilizing that land.

The court also directed AAI to conduct spot survey within two weeks of 600 meters of land required for runway lighting system at the Airport.

In March this year, the HC had directed the state government to file its response with regard to contention of the IAF that 900 meters of land was required for installing Approach Lighting System at Srinagar Airport.
