Srinagar: Life returned to normal in the Kashmir valley after observing a shut down yesterday in protest against the death of three civilians in security force firing on March 28 in Badgam, where a militant also killed and a soldier injured in an encounter.
However, life remained affected as people observed spontaneous strike today in Yaripora Kulgam, the home village of slain militant Waseem of Hizbul Mujahideen(HM).
Though some rumours were spread last night that strike has been extended, the separatists immediately issued a clearification that there is no strike today.
Business and other activities resumed this morning in summer capital, Srinagar, and other major towns and tehsil headquarters in the Kashmir valley after witnessing strike and clashes between demonstrators and security forces.
A shut down was observed yesterday following strike called by both the factions of the Hurriyat Conference (HC) and Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF), spearheading the agitation demanding “ right to self determination”.
Shops and business establishments reopened in major business hubs, including historic Lal Chowk, the nerve centre of the city, Budshah Chowk, Regal Chowk, Hari Singh High Street (HSHS), Residency road and Moulana Azad road, Maisuma, Batmaloo and Dalgate.
Traffic was also plying on all routes, leading to traffic jam on busy routes in the city.
Normalcy also returned in the down town and Shehar-e-Khas (SeK), where shops and other business establishments were functioning normally and traffic plying on all routes.
Situation was also normal in the uptown, including Natipora, where security forces burst teargas shells and resorted to lathicharge to disperse demonstrators yesterday.
Work in government offices and banks was also normal. Educational institutions, which wore a deserted look yesterday due to strike, were also functioning normally.
Reports of return of normalcy were also received from Baramulla, Sopore, Bandipora and other areas in north Kashmir.
Similarly situation was also normal with business and other activities resumed this morning in south and central Kashmir.
Train service resumed today in the Kashmir valley after remaining suspended for security reasons yesterday, when separatist organizations had called for a general strike in protest against the killing of three youths in security force firing in central Kashmir district of Badgam, where a militant was killed and a soldier injured in an encounter on March 28.
All the trains service have been resumed today, a railway official told UNI.
He said rail service between Srinagar-Badgam and Baramulla in north Kashmir has been resumed this morning. Similarly the train service between Badgam-Srinagar-Anantnag-Qazigund in south Kashmir to Banihal in Jammu region was running as per schedule.
He said the decision to suspend train service yesterday was taken after receiving advisory from the state police and administration.
There was apprehension of trouble in the valley following the strike called by separatists yesterday
He said in the past railways suffered loss of property worth crores of rupees in violence in the valley, particularly during strike calls.
However, during about six month-long summer unrest, the rail service remained suspended in the valley.
