DGP R. R Swain’s Awami Darbar creates positive change in J&K

By Raja Mohiuddin

The public outreach (Awami Darbar) initiated by Jammu and Kashmir Director General of Police (DGP) R. R. Swain has signaled a positive change at the public level in J&K Union Territory.

After taking charge as the J&K DGP recently, Swain first included access to the public as one of the priorities and listened to people’s complaints in a unique way.

From the very first day, the common man including men, women and people belonging to the weaker and backward classes directly met the DGP Swain twice and raised their problems.

Most of these complaints and issues were resolved in a timely manner, while steps were taken to address the remaining issues in an appropriate manner.

This is the first time that while dealing with other important issues of the region like J&K, the local police chief has taken out time for himself and is now meeting people directly on a weekly basis and taking steps to address their concerns.

It may be noted that the J&K Police has been dealing with issues like law and order and malaise for a long time and is yet to see such large-scale public outreach in a high-profile manner.

This step has been taken to address the problems and grievances of the common citizens.

So far, the grievance redressal program has seen significant participation from people from different sections of the society.

R.R. Swain while listening to every complaint emphasized that Awami Darbar provides an opportunity to the people having genuine grievances to approach the PHQs in Srinagar and Jammu in a time bound manner for redressal.

He stressed the importance of complaints being genuine and urged citizens to use available redressal platforms before bringing issues to the notice of the DGP.

In his interaction with the media recently, the DGP termed the programme as a new endeavour with an important message value to connect with the people.

He expressed confidence that the program would yield substantial results by addressing various types of grievances and complaints affecting the police administration.

Regarding counter-violence efforts, the DGP stressed the need for joint community efforts involving parents, schools, religious teachers and friends to prevent youth from falling prey to terror handlers from across the border.

During the recent public interactions, the common man can directly approach the DGP with his grievances.
In this way a positive message has reached the society. First of all, the practice of corruption and bribery in the police department has been controlled to a great extent. Because when the general public can directly meet the police chief, a sense of apprehension develops among the staff below. Apart from this, the police chief has also given a clear message to control this important problem by taking strict action against drugs and narcotics in his short time.

DGP Swain said that the planned import of drugs is condemnable.

Emphasising that those involved in the narco trade will not be spared. In recent times, the benevolent move to seize the properties of drug traders has also helped in controlling the problem and the senses of drug smugglers have begun to dissolve, a step being appreciated at the public level.

The general public in J&K seems to be very enthusiastic about these people-friendly steps of the new DGP and at the same time it is appealed to the government that even if the tenure of such high and talented officers has to be extended, it should not be hesitated because it is more beneficial for the society to have such talented officers in the service of the public for a long time.
