Awantipora Police Nab Two Impersonators for Extortion
In a swift crackdown, the Awantipora Police have arrested two individuals accused of impersonating persons close to law enforcement and extorting money from members of the public.
The arrests were made following a formal complaint filed by Mushtaq Ahmad Dar, son of Gh Rasool Dar, a resident of Naristan. Dar alleged that the duo had been falsely presenting themselves as having close ties with police officials and demanding money from individuals under the guise of offering protection or influence.
The accused have been identified as Jaliya Parveen, daughter of Mohd Amin Rather from Monghal, Anantnag, and Bilal Ahmad Rah, son of Gh Ahmad Rah from Chanapora, Srinagar. According to police, the pair were primarily targeting individuals summoned for questioning, exploiting their fear of legal consequences to extort payments.
The fraudulent activities came to light after several victims stepped forward, reporting instances of threats and coercion. Acting swiftly, Police Station Tral registered an FIR (No. 62/2025) under relevant sections of the law and launched an investigation.
Both accused are now in police custody, and further investigations are underway.
The Awantipora Police have urged the public to stay alert and avoid falling prey to such scams. They encourage citizens to report any suspicious activities immediately and have reiterated their commitment to cracking down on anti-social elements to uphold public safety and trust.
