PM Modi and Carney Meet to Reset India-Canada Relations at G7 Summit

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney held a pivotal bilateral meeting on June 17, 2025, during the G7 Summit in Kananaskis, Alberta. This marks their first in-person interaction since Carney assumed office following Canada's recent general elections.

The leaders reaffirmed the importance of India-Canada ties, emphasizing shared democratic values, respect for the rule of law, and commitment to upholding sovereignty and territorial integrity. They agreed to take calibrated and constructive steps to restore stability in the relationship, beginning with the early return of High Commissioners to each other’s capitals.

Discussions also covered opportunities for future collaboration in areas such as clean energy, digital transformation, artificial intelligence, LNG, food security, critical minerals, higher education, mobility, and supply chain resilience. Both leaders expressed interest in promoting a free and open Indo-Pacific and agreed to restart negotiations on the Early Progress Trade Agreement (EPTA), with a view to paving the way for a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA).

Acknowledging the importance of people-to-people connections, the leaders agreed to leverage these ties to the benefit of both countries and committed to staying in touch, looking forward to meeting each other again at the earliest opportunity.

This meeting signifies a potential reset in India-Canada relations, which had been strained in recent years. The decision to reappoint High Commissioners and resume diplomatic engagements marks a step towards rebuilding trust and enhancing bilateral cooperation.
