JDU Urges Centre to Intervene to Revive Kashmir Tourism

Janta Dal United (JDU), Jammu and Kashmir, on Monday appealed to the Government of India to take immediate steps to revive the tourism sector in Kashmir, warning that continued inaction could lead to irreversible economic and social damage.

JDU J&K President G.M. Shaheen said tourism, once a major source of employment and economic stability in the region, is facing serious decline due to what he described as policy paralysis, administrative shortcomings, and the absence of a structured revival plan at the local level.

Shaheen said that promotional campaigns and seasonal initiatives have failed to translate into improvement on the ground, with tourists encountering damaged roads, poor connectivity, inadequate facilities, traffic congestion, and weak safety and sanitation standards. He said the gap between official claims and ground realities has adversely affected tourist confidence, resulting in reduced footfall and loss of livelihoods.

Calling for a centrally driven and time-bound tourism revival plan, Shaheen demanded dedicated funding, strict monitoring, and accountability mechanisms. He also sought immediate upgradation of tourism infrastructure, improved access roads, better destination management, year-round promotion, and direct relief for tourism stakeholders facing financial distress.

He warned that failure to act promptly could further deepen economic challenges and public dissatisfaction in a region heavily dependent on tourism. The party said it would continue to raise the issue until a comprehensive and sustainable revival strategy is implemented.
