Ghulam Rasool Hami flags rising drug abuse, calls for strict action

Chief of Karwani Islami International, Ghulam Rasool Hami on Friday expressed serious concern over the growing prevalence of drugs and alcohol in Jammu and Kashmir, stating that it contradicts the region’s spiritual and cultural values.

Addressing a large gathering at the Central Jamia Masjid in Banihal after Friday prayers, Hami said that moral and social degradation, including substance abuse, poses a serious threat to society.

He said that while peace and economic development are essential for progress, moral integrity and preservation of social values are equally important for the upliftment of a civilized society. “Unchecked consumption of alcohol and narcotics leads to the decline of nations,” he warned.

Hami expressed concern over the rising sale and consumption of alcohol in the Valley and cautioned that failure to address the issue could lead to serious long-term consequences.

Highlighting the efforts of his organisation, he said Karwani Islami International has been actively working for nearly three decades to combat drug abuse through awareness campaigns, seminars and public outreach programmes.

He recalled a past anti-drug campaign in which a large number of people supported a complete ban on alcohol, but said such efforts did not receive adequate political attention.

Calling for immediate intervention, Hami urged the government to formulate strict policies and enforce laws to curb the spread of drugs and alcohol. He stressed that protecting the youth is essential for ensuring a stable and prosperous future.

He also appealed to educational institutions to play a proactive role in promoting moral values and discipline among students.

Describing Kashmir as a land of saints and spiritual heritage, Hami said the spread of intoxicants undermines its dignity and cultural ethos. He urged authorities to take concrete steps to eradicate drug abuse and ensure a drug-free society.
