Traffic resumes on Kashmir highway for one-way only

Srinagar: Traffic was today resumed on the national highway, connecting the Kashmir valley with the rest of the country after remaining suspended yesterday for security reasons in view of the Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Jammu where he inaugurated Chenani-Nashri tunnel on Srinagar-Jammu road.

However, despite opening of the longest road tunnel in the country, only one-way traffic will continue till the damaged portion of the highway between Ramban and Ramsu is repaired fully.

Today traffic was allowed from Jammu to Srinagar since only one-way traffic is allowed on the highway for the past about three months, a traffic police official told UNI.

However, no vehicle, including those belonging to Army and other security agencies, would be allowed from opposite direction, he said.

The official said hundreds of vehicles, including trucks, carrying essentials, and passengers left Jammu for Kashmir this morning.

Meanwhile, large number of empty trucks and oil tankers are stranded at different places on this side of the Jawahar tunnel, including Qazigund and Anantnag.

The truckers said that as per original one-way traffic schedule, vehicles were to ply from Kashmir valley to Jammu today. However, after traffic from Jammu to Srinagar was suspended from yesterday due to PM’s visit, authorities changed the schedule and allowed up convoy today, affecting us (truckers).

Only one-way traffic is being allowed on the highway since January this year after landslides and shooting stones badly damaged the road at several places, where only one-vehicle can cross at a time.

The Border Roads Organisation (BRO), responsible for the maintainance of the highway are working to repair the damaged portion of the road and resume both way traffic.
