Panic in uptown Srinagar after embankment of Jehlum caved in

Srinagar:  Panic gripped in uptown areas of Srinagar when a portion of river Jehlum caved in at Lasjan area Wednesday evening.

Meanwhile, Chief Engineer and other senior engineers of the Irrigation and Flood Control (I&FC) have rushed to the spot after hearing the news, official sources said.

They said a portion of embankment of river Jehlum caved in at Lasjan area, triggering panic among the frightened local population, who blamed the government for failing to strengthen the embankments of the river after 2014 devastating floods. However, as the water level in the river was low due to dry weather, there was no immediate threat of flood. Had the river been flowing at its normal level, water would have entered entire city, the agitated locals said.
